A table just like Mom's

Thursday, May 13, 2010

I started using a table cloth this spring and soon realized why my mother always kept a piece of plexiglass on her tabletop when my brother and I were growing up.  She always has a cloth on her table and a mug or vase of flowers from the yard.

We got an acrylic sheet cut to size at Lowes' for our tabletop.  And have since stopped using plates.  Okay, only the kids skip the plates.  But now I don't have to get upset about it.

Do you cover anything with plastic or do anything else just like Mom?

I love the idea of either plexi or glass on top of the table. Growing up my Grandmother has a glass top for her dining table, end tables, coffee table, dressers, chest of drawers anything that had a flat surface. I guess that why to this day her furniture still looks new.

We've ALWAYS had glass on top of our table cloth and I LOVE it! It wipes off and shines. Markers and crayons and glue come off so easy. The only negative is when water spills I have to watch to see if any water got UNDER the glass and dry it off so it doesn't hurt the wood underneath. Never thought of using plexiglass. I wonder if it's as durable. Our table top sure gets a lot of abuse!

I'm right there with you all! Except I use a sheet of very thick clear vinyl. It's so easy to remove and switch up the tablecloth underneath. I am carrying on the tradition of my husband's family with it :)

My Mom always has candles on her table, a tradition I have continued in my family. It is simple, but it signifies "family dinner" and it doesn't quite feel right when we don't have them.

Glass on top of the table cloth is a great idea. I don't really like the plastic table clothes and this is a great alternative.

we don't even have a table! haha... that's what we get for living in the city with a toddler--- space is too scarce to take up with a whole table :)
